Books are Cool. Sorta

August 2nd, 2007

Tired of the “cool” lines yet?  I’m not.  Coolparts.com now has 79 cool books.  These books cover a range of topics from Welding guides, Brake guides, Fords, Mopar, Imports, Volkswagens, etc.  If you need it, chances are we have a book for it.  These books are all published by HP Books.  Some of the books we have include:

Dorman Images

July 24th, 2007

Dorman has provided us a CD with images for a large subset of their products.  We have put this on our website so that now when you lookup a Dorman part, you will see exactly what it looks like.

More cool website updates coming soon.  We promise.

Dorman OE Solutions

July 19th, 2007

Dorman has a product line called “OE Solutions”. Some of the products in the OE Solutions product line include Axle Shafts, Cam Synchronizer (hard to spell), control arms, manifolds, balancers, fans, etc. The list is really longer then this but I dont want to repeat it all. Anyhow, thanks to the awesome folks at Dorman we have compiled a list of vehicle application data for Dorman OE Solutions parts.

In other words, if you are looking for a control arm for your 2000 Olds Intrigue (my car), you can just click on the Dorman picture, put in your year, make, model, submodel (optional), and it will show you the control arms that fit your car.

The next feature we are working on is that when you pick the category of car part you want (Camshaft Synchronizer for example), a search box will come up as well and let you find that part. If you prefer to browse for a specific car part, you can click that part on the left hand menu (yes, a camshaft synchronizer again) and then you will see a selection box for the year, make, model, submodel search only for that specific part.  At present, this works only for Dorman but we will slowly be implementing it for our K&N, Edelbrock, and Proform.

One of the main challenges we have had is that each four of these manufacturers has provided the data in a different format.  So for example, one might have Ford F-150 as a make  and model, while another one might have Ford F-150 Pickup as a make and model.  Some parts are specific to your engine, some to the submodel.  Combining these into one application search that actually works is a huge undertaking.  But it’s something we are slowly chipping away it.

Their are probably going to be some bugs on the website.  If anybody has any feedback on the search, or comments, please contact us or leave a comment.  Thank you for your continued support.

When is a tool cool?

July 10th, 2007

Cheesy headline aside, this question is quite interesting.  When is a tool cool?  Of course posing the question, I have an answer.  A tool is cool when it is high quality, affordable, and useful.  With that in mind, I’d love to introduce everyone to some new product lines that you can now buy at Coolparts.

Lisle Corp - Almost every tool that they have is Made in the USA.  While I won’t outright say that Made in the USA products are better, its nice to buy a product that supports employment in the states.   Lisle Corp has been making tools for more then one hundred years, and this translates to quality.  We have a nice line of the brand new Lisle Specialty Tools.

Wilmar Corp - This is the company that makes the Performance Tools and Mechanic Products product lines.  These tools are also incredibly high quality, and dependable.  I won’t claim that Performance Tool and Mechanic Tool is the best tool you can buy, but you can put three of them in your toolbox instead of one of the well-known brand names.  Wilmar Corp does make tools that are dollar-for-dollar an awesome value.  And after looking at other websites, Coolparts offers the best (lowest) price for these products.

Do expect more tools to be added with time.  In fact, don’t be too surprised to see a brand new section of Coolparts dedicated to Tools to be open soon.  If there is a Lisle or Wilmar tool you need that you don’t see on our site, please let me know and we can help you get it.

Product References are Cool

June 25th, 2007

Since the start of the site, I have always thought hard on how to differentiate ourselves from the competition.  There are plenty of differences already, but most of them are things most people never think about.  For example, we provide a true toll-free number that you can call to take your order.  And I say true, because a lot of places have a number that either puts you on hold for ten minutes, or takes you straight back to voice mail.  Good luck getting a call back.

Another difference between us and a lot of the competition is that we have a real warehouse.  Sixty thousand square feet of it.  When you place your order on the site, we process it the same day, and 99% of orders will get shipped out that same day.  If we ever have to put any of your parts on backorder, we’ll tell you.

Now back to the latest website change.  A lot of our product listings are now going to have product references.  For example, when I looked up a replacement air filter for my old car, a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue, I got the following listing: http://www.coolparts.com/products/Replacement_Air_Filter-466-0.html.  When I click on that, it showed me the product information, and a link to download an installation guide.  Currently we have it for our K&N parts, but Edelbrock is next.

Besides product references, be on the lookup for a knowledge base.  If you would like to contribute anything to our knowledge base or have an article that you think we could publish on the Coolparts.com site, please email me at vlad@coolparts.com.

Coolparts.com is now XHTML 1.0 Compliant

June 18th, 2007

Coolparts.com is now compliant with the XHTML 1.0 Transitional standard.  Here is a brief introduction to what this compliance is, and what it means to Coolparts.com.

HTML Compliance means that your web-page is formatted in a certain and standard compliant way.   This means that a program like Internet Explorer or Firefox will be able to better render the same page.  Also, the rendering of the page will be similir.  Note, this is not guaranteed because there are still differences between different browsers.

We decided to make our web pages be XHTML 1.0 Compliant because we wanted additional insurance that all of our visitors would see the same website.  Also, going through all the pages to assure the compliance helped us find numerous bugs and errors that were quickly repaired  I am still debating on whether to put the XHML 1.0 Compliant sticker on our homepage.

If you have your own homepage, and wish test your website for compliance, go to http://validator.w3.org/. Put in your website URL, and hit Check. You will probably get a page saying that there are 100 errors or mistakes on the page. In actuality, there is less then this. Just that some errors get compounded by other ones and likewise.

Not every single page on Coolparts.com is XHTML 1.0 Compliant. So if you find a page that is not yet compliant, please contact us for a status page.

Thank you
Vlad

Proform Carburetors on Sale

June 15th, 2007

I usually use this blog to describe new developments on the site. This post is the exception where I am going to tell you about an incredible deal that we are offering on Coolparts.com. From today until July 16th, Proform Street Series Carburetor’s are going to be discounted. Here is a comparison of our prices and the competition:

Part# Description Our Price Jegs Summit
67211 600 CFM Carb 369.89 414.99 415.95
67212 650 CFM Carb 382.49 424.99 427.95

Some reasons to use Proform Street Series Carburetors instead of the competition is:

1. Die-cast aluminum fuel bowls for added durability and longevity, polished to a shine.
2. Sight-glass windows for easy fuel level adjustments (we recommend PROFORM P/N 67443 float adjustment tool).
3. Changeable idle feed restrictors and air bleeds for easy air/fuel ratio tuning.
4. Billet metering blocks for added strength, durability and weight savings.
5. Billet base plates for added strength, durability, and weight savings (no more cracked corners!).
6. Notched secondary float with jet extensions to eliminate fuel starvation.

If you want, you can take a look at the Proform Street Series Carburetor Promotion Flier.

Friday is our release day

June 11th, 2007

It seems like in the last few weeks, Friday has been our release day.  The day when everything comes together.  Last Friday was no different.  Now when you click on a category on the side of the page, instead of it showing you hundred’s of products within that category that are similar, it will show you the product lines we carry under those categories.  When you click on one of the product lines, it will show you a description and information about that product line.  In addition, you will get a vehicle application search box where you can find that exact part for your vehicle.

We’re hoping that this new feature makes browsing our website even more friendlier and easier.  If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know.  If you enjoyed the last format better, let us know about that as well.

Does anybody read this?

June 6th, 2007

Our readers seem to be very quiet so I am not sure if anybody is actually reading this blog.  In response to that, I’m going to run a small test.  Every Wednesday, I will release a new promotional code that you can use to get a discount when ordering on Coolparts.com.  The code for this week is:

Promotional Code: BLOGREAD
Discount: You will get $5 off any order over $40.

Since we are selling the parts at wholesale prices, using this promotional code makes it all the more sweeter.  This promotional code will work up until next Tuesday.  Then we will be releasing a new promotional code.  Also, if you need any help placing the order, you can email me at vlad@coolparts.com or call our Customer Support line at 1-866-480-2751.   We have a lot of very smart and helpful people who can not only take your order but also make sure you get the right product for your vehicle.

Thanks for reading.

Edelbrock Products helps us reach 4700+ products

June 4th, 2007

We are very proud to announce that Coolparts.com will now be carrying Edelbrock parts.  There are over 3000 Edelbrock parts that we have added to our system in the last few weeks.  All of the Edelbrock parts are being sold at wholesale prices.  Coolparts.com also has the accurate weight of 99% of our items so that you will always know what your shipping will cost when you place your order.

While I am quite happy with this milestone, there are a few things that we plan to fix.  The first item on our list is to build a vehicle -> part database that will allow you to find parts that are specific to your vehicle.  The second thing that we would like to do is add more information about the products we sell such as installation instructins, better product descriptions, and better product images.  Finally, we will be adding more payment methods to accomodate people who don’t feel comfortable ordering with a credit card.

We won’t stop at Edelbrock either.  By the end of June, we hope to be carrying 10,000+ SKU’s of the best brands out their.  We are also very eager to get feedback from our users.  Please send me an email at vlad@coolparts.com or add a comment with your feedback / suggestion.
